Variations and substitutions

  • Try panko bread crumbs, crushed saltine crackers or crushed Ritz crackers instead of the regular bread crumbs.
  • Use any type of onion you like in place of the shallots. Diced sweet onion is also yummy.
  • Any type of starch can be used to thicken the gravy. Some other options instead of cornstarch are tapioca starch or arrowroot powder.
  • Fresh parley for garnish is totally optional. You can also used dried parsley if you like.
  • Medium ground beef or extra lean ground beef can be used instead of lean ground beef.
  • A mixture of oregano, thyme and basil can be used in place of the Italian seasoning.
  • Add some diced onions to the beef mixture for extra flavor.
  • For a cheesy version, top the patties with shredded cheese when ready to serve.
  • For a spicy version, add some cayenne pepper to the beef mixture.
