Grilled chicken: Grilled chicken breasts or thighs are a protein-packed addition to your meal. Season with salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs and spices, and grill until cooked through.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Salted butter. You may substitute salted butter with unsalted butter, just taste and adjust the seasonings as you cook.
  • Truffle salt. If you’re unable to find truffle salt and don’t have time to order it from Amazon, use regular salt and add a little extra parmesan cheese. It won’t be the same but it will give your dish a little extra oompf to it.
  • Baby Bella mushrooms. Baby Bella’s are also known as crimini mushrooms, but if you don’t have that at your grocery store then you can use button mushrooms.
  • White wine. We use white wine to deglaze the pan in this French onion pasta recipe but you can also use chicken or vegetable broth. You could also try a splash of white wine vinegar as well.
  • Linguine. If you don’t have linguine noodles, try whatever long pasta you have in your cabinet. Spaghett or spaghettini will work just as well.

Absolutely! While we used linguine for this easy French onion pasta recipe, you can use any type of pasta you prefer. Just be sure to check the package the cooking time according to the package instructions.

Yes, you can easily make this recipe vegetarian by omitting the Worcestershire sauce or finding an option that doesn’t have anchovies (if you’re in Canada, the Compliments brand is anchovy free. Annie’s is also a vegan option.

Aside from using gluten-free pasta, you could also need to find a gluten-free thickener to replace the flour (like cornstarch or arrow root powder, and use less), plus look for a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce. This recipe was not tested with those options, but feel free to play around and leave us a comment if you do.

While this carmelized onion pasta is best enjoyed fresh, you can make the sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat the sauce on the stove and cook the pasta just before serving.

Unfortunately, this recipe does not freeze well due to the cream-based sauce. The texture and flavor may be altered after freezing and thawing.

How to Make French Onion Pasta

You’ll need to make some roasted garlic for the pasta dish first. Don’t worry it’s super easy.

Slice the top 1/4 of a head of garlic off and remove as much of the skin as possible.

Rub the garlic with salt and olive oil, then wrap in foil.

Roast in a preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until garlic is soft.

Make the Creamy French Onion Sauce

Melt butter in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Meanwhile, in a separate frying pan, sauté sliced mushrooms for 15 minutes.

Add sliced onions to the Dutch oven with the melted butter. Caramelize the onions, stirring often, for about 20 minutes.

Cook the pasta to al dente, following the instructions on the back of the box. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water.

Squeeze the roasted garlic out of the bulb and add it along with the sautéed mushrooms to the Dutch oven. Cook for 10 minutes.

Deglaze the pan with white wine. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir for 2 minutes.

Pour in reserved pasta water, thyme, salt, pepper, Worcestershire, and cream.

Stir until well combined and cook for 5 minutes to thicken.

Add cooked pasta to the Dutch oven and stir until well-mixed. Lower the heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Grate cheese over the pasta and garnish with fresh thyme. Serve and enjoy!

  • Preheat the oven to 375*. Heat a Dutch oven over medium heat, and a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Remove most of the skin from the garlic bulb and slice off the top. Place onto the center of a foil square and drizzle with olive oil and truffle salt. Roll up foil and place into the oven for 20 minutes to roast.
  • Add butter to the Dutch oven and melt.
  • Add mushrooms to the frying pan and sauté for 15 minutes
  • Once the butter is melted in the Dutch oven, add the sliced onions. Caramelize, stirring often, for 20 minutes
  • Meanwhile, cook the pasta Al dente according to package directions. Reserve ½ cup pasta water.
  • Squeeze the roasted garlic out of the bulb.
  • Add mushrooms and garlic to the Dutch oven and cook for 10 minutes.
  • Deglaze the pan with the wine.
  • Next, sprinkle flour over the top and stir. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Pour in the pasta water, thyme, salt, pepper, Worcestershire, and cream. Stir until combined. Cook for 5 minutes to thicken.
  • Next, add the pasta to the Dutch oven and stir until well mixed. Lower the heat to a simmer and cover. Cook for 5 minutes
