Caesar Steak Sandwich Ingredients

Ingredients Needed

Caesar Dressing

I used storebought for this recipe to make life easier. The dressing I used with the Mother Raw Caesar Vinaigrette (it’s delicious).

Since I have a household of picky eaters, I like to look for a vegetarian Caesar salad dressing that doesn’t have anchovies.

For once, I prefer storebought over homemade but if you’re wanting to make it from scratch check out the following recipe.

To make Caesar dressing without anchovies, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Whisk all the ingredients together until well combined and refrigerate until ready to use.

Beef Steak Choices

I used leftover steak from the night before to make this sandwich.

You can reheat it by slowly bringing it up to temperate in a skillet or on the grill.

I simply used the microwave, the downside is my medium steak ended up well done, but it was still delicious.

For the perfect Caesar steak sandwich, you have some options when it comes to choosing the right cut of beef. Whichever cut you choose, make sure to season it with salt and pepper before grilling:

  • Flank Steak: A lean and flavorful cut that works well for sandwiches. Be sure to slice it thinly against the grain to make it tender and easy to bite into.
  • Top Sirloin: A tender and juicy cut that is ideal for grilling. Look for top sirloin boneless for easier slicing.
  • Top Round Steak: A lean and budget-friendly option. Marinate it to make it tender and more flavorful.

Sandwich Components

Apart from the Caesar dressing and steak, you’ll need the following components for your sandwich:

  • Garlic Bread: Toasted slices of bread with butter, minced garlic, and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. This will add a delicious garlicky crunch to your sandwich.

You can make your own or buy storebought. I purchased a garlic bread baguette from the grocery store and it was perfect for a sandwich. If you buy thicker garlic bread, it will just make more sandwiches.
  • Romaine Lettuce: Fresh, crisp romaine lettuce adds a touch of green and extra crunch. Make sure it’s washed and dried before using.

Optional Toppings

Feel free to customize your Caesar steak sandwich with any of these optional toppings:

  • Shredded Parmesan Cheese: Sprinkle some on top of the dressing for an extra cheesy touch.
  • Grilled Onions: Thinly slice and grill your onions until they are soft and caramelized to add some sweetness and texture.
  • Crispy Bacon: Add bacon for a more traditional Caesar salad base. You can crumble it into the salad or lay it over top of the steak.
  • Sundried Tomatoes: Marinated sundried tomatoes (rinsed of oil) take this sandwich up 10 levels. I was inspired by the Caesar Salad from InspiredGo (the Canadian salad delivery service I use).
  • Sliced Avocado: Top your sandwich with creamy avocado (it adds more fiber too).
  • Fresh Tomato Slices: Add fresh tomatoes if you prefer them over sundried.
  • Roasted Red Peppers: This will bring a little sweetness and extra veggies to your sandwich.

Now that you have all your ingredients, assemble your sandwich by layering the lettuce, steak, Caesar dressing, and any optional toppings on the garlic bread.

Ingredient Substitutions

Sometimes you might not have all the ingredients to make the classic Caesar steak sandwich, or maybe you just want to try something new. No worries! You can always experiment with different variations and substitutions to make the perfect sandwich for your taste buds.

Healthier Choices

If you’re looking to make your Caesar steak sandwich a bit healthier, consider these simple tweaks:

  • Swap the bread: Opt for whole-grain bread, which will give you more fiber and nutrients. But garlic bread adds a ton of flavor to this recipe.
  • Leaner protein: Replace steak with leaner protein like chicken or turkey to cut down on saturated fat. You’ll still gain the iron you need in your meal. The chicken version will be in our cookbook.
  • Less sauce: Caesar dressing can be high in fat. Cut back on it, or substitute it with a lighter dressing.

Vegetarian Option

Vegetarians fear not! You can still enjoy a Caesar-inspired sandwich by using grilled portobello mushrooms or even thick slices of marinated tofu as your main protein. The trick is to make sure you cook these alternatives well so they absorb the delicious flavors of your dressing and toppings.

As you can see, there are countless ways to customize your Caesar steak sandwich. The key is to have fun and listen to your taste buds – they won’t steer you wrong!

Equipment Needed

To make a Caesar salad steak sandwich, you’ll need a few essential tools to get started. Having the right equipment on hand will ensure your sandwich-making process goes smoothly and efficiently.

Preparation Steps

This recipe uses leftover cooked steak but if you were cooking the steak for this recipe here are some tips.

Marinating the Steak

This step is optional but if you want a flavorful steak, feel free to marinate it.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Olive oil
  • Garlic
  • Soy sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce

Combine these ingredients in a zip-top bag or sealable container and add the steak to it.

Ensure the steak is evenly coated, then put it in your refrigerator to marinate. Ideally, let it marinate for at least 2 hours, or even overnight for maximum flavor.

Cooking the Steak

Once the steak is marinated, you’re ready to cook it.

Preheat the grill or heat a nonstick skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil and butter.

Take the steak out of the marinade and let any excess drip off. Place the steak in the hot skillet and cook for about 3-5 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and your desired level of doneness.

After cooking, let the steak rest for a few minutes before slicing it into thin strips. This will help keep it juicy and tender.

While you’re waiting, prepare the other components of your sandwich.

Assembling the Sandwich

To assemble your Caesar steak sandwich, start by preparing some baked garlic bread.

You can either buy it pre-made or make it yourself by brushing sliced French bread with a mixture of melted butter, minced garlic, and dried parsley.

Bake or toast the bread until crispy and golden. I followed the package directions, which were 6-8 minutes.

If you’re making the Caesar dressing, mix together mayonnaise, lemon juice, grated Parmesan cheese, and some garlic. You can either spread it over the bread or toss it in the salad.

Speaking of, toss the lettuce and parmesan in a bowl with the Caesar vinaigrette (I used store-bought).

Now it’s time to build your sandwich.

Add the Caesar salad to the garlic toast, top it with sliced steak, and any additional toppings (sundried tomatoes, bacon, etc). Add extra salad if desired.

Close the sandwich with the other piece of bread, press it down gently to help secure the filling, and enjoy your delicious Caesar salad steak sandwich!

Go light on the dressing and be mindful of the order of your layers. It’s a good idea to place the lettuce at the bottom, followed by the steak, and then the other toppings. Drizzle any extra dressing over the top layer if you like it saucy.

Storage Instructions

Storing your Caesar steak sandwich properly is crucial to maintain its freshness and delicious taste. Here’s how you can store your sandwich to enjoy it later:

Room Temperature

If you plan to eat your sandwich within a few hours, you can leave it at room temperature. Just be sure to cover it with cling wrap or aluminum foil to prevent it from drying out. Don’t leave it out for more than 2 hours.

Refrigeration

It’s best to refrigerate your Caesar steak sandwich.

We recommend making the salad portion of the sandwich fresh, so the lettuce doesn’t get soggy and assembling prior to eating.

Wrap the garlic bread and steak with cling wrap or place it in an airtight container. This will help keep it fresh for up to 48 hours.

When you’re ready to eat, toss the salad and assemble the sandwich.

Freezer Storage

You can store the garlic bread and steak in the storage.

Do not freeze the salad portion of this recipe.

To do this, wrap it tightly in a freezer-safe cling wrap, then aluminum foil, and place it in a freezer-safe container or bag.

It’s a good idea to label it with the date and contents (we like these freezer labels).

When properly stored, your sandwich can last for up to 1 month in the freezer. To enjoy, simply thaw it in the fridge overnight and then heat it up in the oven or microwave.

Steak Sandwich Variations

Want to mix things up? Try these tasty variations on the classic Caesar steak sandwich:

  • Steak & Pepper: Add some color and crunch by topping your sandwich with fresh bell pepper slices. Choose red, yellow, or orange peppers for a burst of antioxidants and vitamin C.
  • Southwest-Style: Give your sandwich a southwestern twist by adding avocado, cilantro, and jalapeño slices. The heart-healthy fats in avocado help balance your meal.
  • Mediterranean Twist: Swap the Caesar dressing for a drizzle of olive oil, and add feta cheese, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes for some Mediterranean flair.

FAQs about Caesar steak sandwiches

Garlic bread or garlic toast! This adds a ton of flavor thanks to the already-added butter, herbs, and garlic. If you prefer something different, opt for a crusty baguette or ciabatta to provide texture and hold up to the sandwich fillings.

In addition to the Caesar dressing and steak, you might consider adding some fresh lettuce, ripe tomato slices, sautéed onions, and roasted bell peppers. For a little extra flair, try incorporating crispy bacon, avocado, or even grilled mushrooms.

  1. Season your meat well before cooking.
  2. Let the steak rest before slicing (this way you don’t lose the juices).
  3. Two works: garlic bread.
  4. Use your favorite Caesar salad dressing, so there’s no messing around.
  5. Toast the bread before assembling the sandwich to enhance its flavor and texture.

Side Dishes for Steak Caesar Sandwiches

Need some easy side dishes? Here are a few great options:

For a casual and tasty spin, you can make your own garlic-herb dipping sauce by mixing minced garlic, parsley, chives, and lemon zest into mayonnaise or sour cream. Pair this delicious sauce with your favorite kettle-cooked chips or try making your own potato or sweet potato chips for an extra special touch.
